A spring Saturday on the Market in pictures..
This week, we have a bit of a departure from the norm. Yes, that’s right, today, I’ll let the wonderful images do all the talking. Besides that, I’m really a man of few words and think in pictures anyway. So, enjoy, and come on out to view these wonderful products live and [...]
A Real Downtown Roanoke Agenda
Mayoral Candidate David Bowers and Roanoke City Councilman and candidate Brian Wishneff have created their own plan for spending the $12M budgeted for the Amphitheater project along Reserve Ave. The plan includes a smaller 2000-3000 seat Amphitheater in Elmwood Park as well as 6 other projects. The plan makes a lot of sense especially since [...]
Trolleys on their way to downtown Roanoke
The Roanoke Times posted an article today announcing that by the end of summer Roanoke will have buses painted to resemble classic, red street cars running between Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and downtown Roanoke.
Yes, it is a year round market.
Yes! The Roanoke Farmer’s Market is open year round and while most of the farmers will continue to hide until St. Patrick’s Day, the pig farmers and crafters are out in full force. Here’s a sampling of what Saturday’s market was like. Passing Cheryl Dolby’s Native American sculptures is often like passing a mini art gallery. [...]
There’s this really neat new website called My Roanoke Story that I just discovered. It “is a collaborative effort to highlight the amazing diversity of Roanokers and the talent pool of the Roanoke Valley” and features stories about the people who live, work, and play in the Roanoke Valley. Check it out. You may [...]

Online sales for this event close at noon tomorrow. You can also purchase tickets, if there are any left, from Amrhein’s or Dance Etc. in Vinton. The dress is black [...]
A headless Santa made an appearance Friday night as vendors for Dickens of a Christmas set up for the evening. Santa later gained his head and visitors were able to enjoy the Christmas Parade that made its way down Campbell Avenue. Of course, there was more to see than just the parade. There was a fire [...]
There was a great turnout at Dicken’s last Friday, and this Friday will be even better as we have the Christmas Parade to look forward to. There will also be a sword swallower and a fire eater this week. And of course, there’s also plenty of food and shopping. I set up beside a really nice [...]
The Roanoke City Market building should be the star of the downtown market area. Unfortunately, it’s been falling apart for quite sometime. The bathrooms are in horrendous condition and the third floor isn’t being used at all. Talk among members of DRI suggested they’d like to see this building once again with a complete top [...]
new roof on hartsook building.
The Hartsook building, which received a new balcony back in November, acquired a new roof on Sunday. The roof, which boasts a copper top, covers the balcony and brings the building one step closer to its original, historical look.
Walter’s Greenhouse returned to the Market this past week with gorgeous centerpieces (pictured,) wreaths, and kissing balls. There’s definitely no shortage for those looking for greenery to brighten their homes. There are a good number of farmers offering their own spin on wreaths including Forest Lumsden who created this 30″ beauty. The Martin’s are back with [...]
new carpet isn?t always a good thing.
The Center in the Square had new carpet installed last Monday. Not only was this against the recommendation of the guys who are in charge of the upcoming renovations that should start next year - they’ll just have to rip it back out - but the carpet is ugly as sin. This picture really doesn’t [...]
Last Tuesday was the “Greening of the Market.” Bill Carder, the new Executive Director for DRI took time out from the office to join in the occasion. Bill helped a number of volunteers to cut and hang pine branches on all of the market tables. The greenery was then set off by big, red bows. [...]
Sunday a balcony was installed on the Hartsook Building which sits at the corner of Market Square and Market Street. A balcony was part of the building’s original look in 1920’s. Currently Hartsook houses The Blues BBQ Co. and The Gift Niche. In September, the building also received a new, ten foot door.
guess who won?t be playing martin?s anymore.
Musician jailed after gig goes bad.
Downtown Roanoke, Inc. has hired a new Executive Director. Bill Carder, who has served both as a Councilman, Vice Mayor for Roanoke City, and Chairman of DRI’s board, will begin his new position on November 12th. Not only has Carder worked in politics, but he’s done consulting as well. Most recently he’s consulted for two [...]
While Saturday’s Harvest Festival on the Market had to compete with the craft show at the Civic Center, the Fall Festival in Vinton, and other coinciding events, we still had a great turnout with lots to buy, do, and see. Here are a few pics I was able to snag. Farmers offered dried lavender for sale… along [...]
This week’s City Market newsletter sent out by Hope Hollingsworth contained a schedule of the entertainment for the Harvest Festival that’s coming up this Saturday. I figured I’d share since not everyone gets that newsletter. 10am - Country Kickers Cloggers (From Roanoke) 11am - Floyd Ward Cloggers (From Roanoke) Noon - Broken Wire Band (From Galax) 1:45pm - Jack Tale Players (From Ferrum) 2:30pm [...]
